Students at Ocean Knoll Elementary School in Encinitas, in collaboration with the Lux Art Institute, are creating the ornaments representing California for this year’s National Christmas Tree.

“It’s very special for our class to do the ornaments...” said third grader Sofia Lopez in a statement released by Lux. “It’s something I’ll remember forever.”

Each of the 50 states, plus the territories and the District of Columbia, contribute ornaments to the National Tree, which will be officially unveiled in President’s Park in Washington, D.C. on Dec. 6.

The 24 ornaments created by third grade students working with Lux teaching artist Lissa Corona are tiny log slices, on which the students have painted winter scenes (from beaches to snow-covered landscapes).

The project, which involved students in Christine Usher’s third grade class, was inspired by the work of former Lux resident artist Alison Moritsugu.

“All of us at Lux are proud to be included in this national celebration of the holiday season with our log slice ornaments,” said Reesey Shaw, Lux’s founder and director.

Free tickets for the 91st annual tree-lighting ceremony on Dec. 6 are awarded through an online lottery, which runs from 7 a.m. Oct. 31 through 7 a.m. Nov. 4 (visit thenationaltree.org or call 877-444-6777). There are 3,000 seated tickets and 14,000 standing room tickets available for the event sponsored by the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation.
