Lux announces a new social group created for the museum's young members ages 21-39 interested in deepening their engagement with the organization and connecting in a more personal way with contemporary art and culture. Dubbed Influx, this collective will receive the benefits of membership--free annual admission to the Lux studio, subscription to the quarterly newsletter, discounts and exclusive invitations to member receptions--while also enjoying special events, access to the Lux resident artists and the opportunity to network with like-minded peers in mutual support of a vital and dynamic institution.
A new event, Lux After Hours, designed especially for Influx and supported by a grant from the James Irvine Foundation, will launch on the evening of Thursday, December 8 during the residency of painter Emilio Perez and will kick off Influx programming. To take place in conjunction with artist residencies, Lux After Hours will allow young members to gather together in a setting more exclusive and intimate than Lux@ Night (Lux's popular, monthly community access event for guests 21 and over) while remaining social and educational. Lux will welcome the Influx group to this after-hours weeknight event featuring refreshments, a chance to tour the current exhibition, and the opportunity to meet the Lux artist one-on-one, witness his/her creative process, and discuss the work in the gallery. For the second half of the evening, guests will be invited to continue the fun and take the conversation further at a partnering San Diego venue for snacks and cocktails with fellow members or at another pre-selected, special location, such as the Artist's Residence, located directly beneath the Lux studio.
“Our younger members play a great part in fueling Lux's future growth and longevity as a standout visual arts destination,” says Director Reesey Shaw. “It is through this group that Lux more fully realizes its mission of making art more accessible and personally meaningful."
For more information on how to become a member and participate in Influx, please contact Advancement Assistant Ianna Angelo at [email protected] or call 760 436 6611.
Lux Art Institute, located in Encinitas, Calif., is redefining the museum experience with the region’s only artist-in-residence program that invites artists to live and work on site, while producing a commissioned work of art – start to finish. This one-of-a-kind institution welcomes visitors to not only “see art,” but also to “see art happen.”
Throughout each year, Lux hosts several significant regional, national and international artists who participate in its residency program. Visitors from across the country are able to participate in exclusive liaison-led tours, providing intimate access to the artist-in-residence, the artist’s exhibition and the museum’s permanent collection of indoor and outdoor art. Lux also offers a wide range of innovative programming for all ages.
The recipient of the San Diego Architectural Foundation’s top design award, the Grand Orchid, and the first art museum in California awarded LEED certification for new construction, Lux is located alongside one of Southern California’s few remaining coastal wetlands. The five-acre site also overlooks the San Elijo Lagoon and is surrounded by a wildlife preserve that stretches to the Pacific Ocean.
Through its Phase II Capital Campaign, Lux plans to add more than 25,000 square feet of galleries and classrooms. Once completed, the new building will also feature a hilltop plaza and a series of gardens climbing between the galleries and the Artist Pavilion.
Lux Art Institute is located at 1550 South El Camino Real in Encinitas, Calif. Hours are Thursday and Friday, 1 to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and cost is $10 for two visits.
