Art of Élan Steps Out; Innovative One-Hour Concert Format Presented in North County

This spring, Art of Élan continues to push the boundaries of classical music by bringing its exciting and innovative one-hour concerts to North County audiences, specifically to Lux Art Institute in Encinitas. This April 4 performance will be the first time the critically acclaimed organization will present in North County. “We’re thrilled with the opportunity to partner with such an outstanding and creative arts organization as Lux, as well as step out into the community and showcase our music to North County audiences,” said Artistic Director Kate Hatmaker.

Art of Élan’s regular season concerts have been performed at The San Diego Museum of Art for the past five years. This concert at Lux, presented in addition to the regular concert series at the Museum, continues a commitment from Art of Élan’s artistic directors Kate Hatmaker and Demarre McGill to bring classical music directly to new audiences. Previous concerts have also been held at The Glashaus in Barrio Logan and Luce Loft in East Village, successfully attracting diverse crowds.

The musical evening at Lux will follow the same format as Art of Élan’s successful concerts at The San Diego Museum of Art. The one-hour show will include highlights from recent Art of Élan seasons, featuring Demarre McGill on flute, along with works by NYC composer LJOVA and Mexican composer Arturo Marquez. The concert will also be paired with an opportunity to view the art on display in the Lux studio and allow concertgoers to mingle with the musicians at a special pre-concert reception.

“All of us at Lux are excited to welcome Art of Élan to our studio to combine the elegant classical mastery of their musicians with the exquisite detail of resident artist James Chronister’s elaborate paintings and the natural beauty of Lux’s site. It will no doubt be a profound visual and oratory treat,” said Lux Director Reesey Shaw.

Lux Art Institute is redefining the museum experience with the region’s only artist-in-residence program that invites artists to live and work on site while producing a commissioned work of art – start to finish. Throughout each year, Lux invites five significant artists to participate in its residency program. The public is then invited to visit the studio, where they gain insight into the creative process.

From March 14 through April 13, Lux will host James Chronister, a San Francisco painter who employs a labor-intensive, pointillist technique to achieve strikingly nuanced tonality and depth in his creations. Armed with a tiny brush, he meticulously applies dots of white pigment onto a black background until the images of snowy forest landscapes and palatial interiors emerge, reaching near-photographic veracity.

The 2008 recipient of the San Diego Architectural Foundation’s top design award, the Grand Orchid, and the first art museum in California awarded LEED certification for new construction, Lux’s five-acre site is located alongside one of Southern California’s few remaining coastal wetlands, the San Elijo Lagoon, and is surrounded by a wildlife preserve that stretches to the Pacific Ocean.

Funding for this concert was provided by former County Supervisor Pam Slater-Price.
