Lux Art Institute, San Diego’s first LEED certified interactive art destination will welcome Russian-born painter Alex Kanevsky as the final resident artist of the 2011/2012 Season.

Luminous hues of paint applied with broad brushstrokes and in diaphanous layers imbue the canvases of artist Alex Kanevksy with a sense of dream-like mystery. The works develop slowly as Kanevsky applies gauze-like strata of pigment, building up the facets that create light, shade, and dimension, eventually creating form and foreground, atmosphere and background. Conveying the photographic effect of blurred motion, his subtly abstracted portraits, landscapes and still-lifes represent classical subjects in perpetual flux, reflecting both the specificity of a moment and the fleeting passing of time while also serving as ruminations on contemporary portrait and landscape themes.

From May 31 to June 30, Kanevsky will be living at Lux while working on studies, sketches and large-scale (four 36” x 36” and two 12” x 96”) panels based on live models. Visitors can “see art happen” while he is in residence and view his exhibit, featuring numerous examples of his enigmatic images, through July 28, 2012.

Alex Kanevsky was born in Rostvo-na-Donu, Russia, in 1963 and graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1993. He has received numerous prestigious fellowships and awards, including the Pew Fellowship for painting in 1997. In addition to exhibiting work across North America and Europe, his work has been reviewed in The LA Times, The New York Observer, The Philadelphia Inquirer and New American Paintings. His work is included in the permanent collection of the Achenbach Collection, San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts, de Young and Legion of Honor.
