Jarmo Mäkilä

The large-scale autobiographical paintings of Jarmo Mäkilä reflect personal childhood memories and the mythology of his native Finland. Scenes of boys playing games are a favorite subject.

Mäkilä’s paintings examine the moment at which childhood ends and innocence begins to falter. The exhibition consists of paintings that illuminate memories and emotions associated with childhood. Women are completely absent from enigmatic scenes that analyze male anxieties in a world with hidden rules. The artist allows boyhood memories to be interpreted through a thick layer of the present in large-scale scenes expressing heavy tension. While Mäkilä’s works are autobiographical, their impact is universal in that they reflect good and evil, as well as oppressive loneliness.
While in residence, Mäkilä will complete a new painting and a series of approximately 14 clay boy sculptures as part of an installation called Lord of the Flies, which he summarizes as, “A bouncing discourse between the past and the present.”
Jarmo Mäkilä lives and works in Helsinki, Finland. His career as a painter began in the politically turbulent 1970s. He studied at the University of Helsinki’s School of Art and Design, and at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts where he later taught for almost six years. Having initially painted working-class subjects, Mäkilä moved his attention to the glossy worlds of consumption and popular culture in the 1980s. Combining media images with mythological motifs, the paintings made Mäkilä one of the foremost postmodern painters in Finland. In the 2000s, Mäkilä turned his gaze upon himself and his personal experiences. His paintings have been widely exhibited in galleries, museums, and art fairs worldwide. In 2002, Mäkilä was awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal and in 2011 he was a Carnegie Art Award nominee. His artworks have been collected by all major art museums in Finland, as well as by foundations, institutions, and private collections around the world.
