Cammie Staros

About the Artist

Inspired by Greco-Roman artifacts, Cammie Staros hand builds ceramic vessels and mixes them with industrial materials. Staros takes the art historical trope of vessels as bodies and storytellers into the contemporary by anthropomorphizing the objects and altering their expected stature. They are audacious, lounging, peeking through the blinds, and defying the expectations of ceramics. By disregarding the function of antique pottery, Staros is also questioning their traditional narrative mythologies surrounding gender roles, desire, and violence. Staros was born in Nashville, TN, and based in Los Angeles, CA. She received her M.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, CA and her B.A. in Art and Semiotics from Brown University. Staros has exhibited at Shulamit Nazarian Gallery in Los Angeles, CA; Ghebaly Gallery in Los Angeles, CA; California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, CA; Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles, CA; and Galerie Lefebvre & Fils, Paris, France.
