A longtime resident of Assisi, Italy, American-born painter Alan Feltus creates works filled with subdued light, rich, monochromatic hues and a sense of unspoken narrative. Based on the artist’s own image, his canvases’ poignant figures—eloquent in gesture and glance—invite contemplation while seeming lost in their own worlds of memory.
He was born in Washington, D.C. and studied at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia before earning a bachelor’s degree in fine art from Cooper Union in New York City and a master’s degree in fine art from Yale University. Since 1987, Alan has live in Assisi with his wife, artist Lani Irwin. He has had one-person gallery exhibitions in New York City, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Boca Raton, Wichita, and Washington, D.C., as well as in Chicago, San Francisco, New Orleans and Rome.
He has received numerous grants and prizes, including two Pollock-Krasner Foundation grants, a Raymond P.R. Neilson Prize, a National Endowment for the Arts Individual Fellowship, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation grant, and a Rome Prize Fellowship.
Alan’s paintings are in many important public collections, such as the American Academy in Rome, California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, National Academy Museum and The Cooper Union in New York, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and the Smithsonian Museum of Art, all in Washington, D.C.
