Lux Art Institute Presents Second Annual Kids Summer Art Camp For Aspiring Artists
February 20, 2009
ENCINITAS, CA — (February 20, 2009) — Lux Art Institute will host its
annual Summer Art Camp for “young artists” ages 6-9 on Tuesdays and
Thursdays, and for ages 10-12 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. July 6
to Aug. 6.
At Lux’s Summer Art Camp, kids will make art, talk to real artists and learn
about how they create their work. Located on Luxs five-acre site overlooking the
San Elijo Lagoon in Encinitas, the summer art program will be led by Lux’s
education staff and will include guest speakers and nature walks.
The camp will allow kids to experiment with painting, sculpture, and photography,
as well as collaborate on group art activities, explore the Lux landscape and installations,
and view art in the Lux studio. The focus of Summer Art Camp is not technical instruction,
but creative experimentation and exposure to a variety of materials and processes.
Building on Lux’s school-based outreach program, the Valise Project, and the
Luxcursion program, which brings students to tour the artist’s studio and
do a related art project on site, the camp provides an artistic outlet to youngsters
on summer vacation.
"Last year’s Summer Art Camp was such a hit that we decided to expand programming
this year," says Lux Director of Education Kara Leen. “We’ve added additional
programming for more ages and abilities, while keeping the same intimate environment
of small classes and personal attention.”
Each week costs $75 for non-members; $55 for members. Aspiring artists can sign
up for individual weeks or for all five weeks at a discounted rate ($350 for non-members;
$250 for members). The program will culminate in an open house and artists’
reception—to showcase the work of camp participants—in Lux’s Artist Pavilion
on Thursday, Aug. 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. Participants can invite parents and friends
to see their finished work in a museum setting.
Session space is limited and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
