Brooklyn-based sculptor and photographer Susan Graham begins the Season with an exhibit of industrial, all-too-human products that have undergone imaginative reinvention. Influenced by dreams, fears and memories of growing up in the American Midwest, she uses sugar and porcelain to transform unwieldy machinery and industrial goods— trucks, guns, lawnmowers—into delicate, elegantly surreal objects.
Born and raised in Ohio and currently living and working in New York City, Susan has said about her work: “I have been using both sugar and porcelain to create pieces with the same delicate look and a conceptually similar idea of preciousness, fragility and intense process. My sculptures and installations use repetitive acts or actions--often resulting in the making of a multitude of similar objects--and are linked to a particular psychological state. The materials I use, such as sugar and porcelain, give the pieces a feeling of domesticity or sweetness, while the subjects are ones that make me uncomfortable.”
She is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Her work has been shown at a number of galleries and museums, including Photology Gallery in Milan, Mixed Greens Gallery, Neuberger Museum of Art, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the Whitney Museum at Phillip Morris and recently, a one-person show titled "New Gardens" at Schroeder Romero & Shredder in New York. She is the recipient of several fellowships and grants from organizations such as the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Ruth Chenven Foundation and the New York Foundation for the Arts.
