In an exhibit that will be made up of three distinct but related bodies of work, installation artist Ann Agee makes her home the subject of inspection. With one foot planted in the world of her mother's privileged upbringing and the other in the world of her father's humble beginnings, Agee--long known as a figurative ceramicist--explores the intersection of domestic space and art production, merging decorative and fine arts and playing with historical conventions of art as seen through contemporary eyes.
She gives domesticity its own spin with large-scale murals of idyllic suburban scenes presented on blue and white porcelain tile; elaborate, porcelain vases and hand-made porcelain platters arranged on steel armature; and figurines whose dynamic gestures and lively, humorous poses are an updated riff on commedia dell'arte iconography, celebrating modern, daily life.
Agee, who graduated with a BFA from The Cooper Union School of Art and an MFA from Yale School of Art, has taught at Princeton University as a Visiting Lecturer at the Lewis Center for the Arts from 2006-2010. She has been a recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award, and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, among others. She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the United States, and her work is in the collections of The Brooklyn Museum of Art, NY; The Philadelphia Museum of Art, PA; The RISD Museum, RI; The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA; The Henry Art Museum in Seattle, WA; The Kohler Art Center in Sheboygan, WI; and The Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami, FL.
Ann Agee's exhibit at Lux is underwritten by Laurel Jean Yoder.
